Tell Gov. Brown: Veto Irresponsible Wireless Bill!

Gov. Brown is considering signing SB 649, an irresponsible bill that allows telecommunications companies to deploy an untested wireless technology without community input. If passed, this bill will allow mega-corporations to install new miniature cellphone networks on telephone poles and street lights throughout the state. Meaning they’ll be much closer to our homes, schools and hospitals than traditional cellphone towers.

The potential health impacts of this new technology have barely been studied, and we’re still collecting information about health effects of older wireless technologies. Communities have the right to make their own decisions about wireless technology, but SB 649 strips them of that power.

Health Advocates Urge Governor to Veto 5G Cell Tower Bill / Public News Service

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A bill that would lead to the proliferation of refrigerator-sized 5G cell tower boxes across the state is now on Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk – and health advocates are pressing for a veto.

SB 649 would allow telecom companies to install 5G and other wireless cell equipment on poles and on the ground every few hundred feet without getting a permit from the local jurisdiction, cutting off public input.

A recent study published this year in Scientific Reports examined the effects of frequent touch screen use in children. Their findings suggest that increased usage may negatively affect children’s sleep patterns.

In California the Bill is SB 649 and despite that over 200 cities and 34 counties oppose it, it has passed the Senate and is flying through the Assembly and may be on the Governor’s desk by Sept. 13.

The National Institute for Science, Law and Public Policy’s survey “Neighborhood Cell Towers & Antennas—Do They Impact a Property’s Desirability?” initiated June 2, 2014, has now been completed by 1,000 respondents as of June 28, 2014. The survey, which circulated online through email and social networking sites, in both the U.S. and abroad, sought to determine if nearby cell towers and antennas, or wireless antennas placed on top of or on the side of a building, would impact a home buyer’s or renter’s interest in a real estate property.
